There are four different ghosts in the Pac-Man world – Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. While it may seem like they’re just randomly chasing Pac-Man, there is actually some method to their madness. What many don’t know, however, is that there are specific patterns that the ghosts follow. Pac-Man, they used only the nicknames.Most people know Pac-Man as that yellow, circular creature who runs around a maze, eating dots and trying to avoid ghosts. In Japan they were Oikake, Machibuse, Kimagure, and Otoboke, which respectively meant: "Chaser", "Ambusher", "Fickle", and "Feigned Ignorance", with nicknames Akabei, Pinkī, Aosuke, and Guzuta, which meant "Red Guy", "Pinky", "Blue Guy", and "Slow Guy".Īnother bit that affects it-in the longer-lasting Ms. Shadow (Red) is the most aggressive, Speedy (Pink) is the fastest, Bashful (Blue) is actually skittish-sometimes you can get that one to run away from you even when you aren't powered, and Pokey (Orange), though I don't remember specifics about that one's behavior. But paying attention to the formal names does tie well to their behavior. So unless you spent a lot of time staring at the attract mode (which I did, because I'd just discovered arcade games but had no quarters) it would be easy for the formal names to fade in memory. In almost all the literature about the game, and cartoons, only the nicknames were used.
